St Mary’s Church The name Watford is first mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter of , where “Watforda” is one of the places marking the boundary of “Oxanhaege”; this is believed to refer to the ford. It is not mentioned in the Domesday Book of , when this area was part of St Albans’ Abbey’s manor of cashio. In the 12th century the Abbey was granted a charter allowing it to hold a market here and the building of St Mary’s Church began. The settlement’s location helped it to grow, since as well as trade along this north-south through route it possessed good communications into the vale of St Albans to the east and into the Chiltern Hills along the valley of the River Chess to the west. The town grew modestly, assisted by travellers passing through to Berkhamsted Castle and the royal palace at Kings Langley. A big house was built at Cassiobury in the 16th century. This was partly rebuilt in the 17th century and another substantial house was built nearby at The Grove.
The parentage of Eudes [I], the earliest recorded member of the Dammartin families in England, is not known. According to Domesday Descendants, he was the son of Hugues [I] Comte de Dammartin , but it is unclear whether this suggestion is based on a specific source. Another possibility is that Eudes was a knight who took his name from the castle of Dammartin but was either unrelated, or related only distantly, to the comital family.
A further difficulty is introduced by an undated charter, quoted below, which was witnessed by numerous Dammartin individuals. The basis for this assessment is not known.

Reconstruction Roman and Early Christian There are many ways in which the term ancient Roman art can be defined, but here, as commonly elsewhere, it is used generally to describe what was produced throughout the part of the world ruled or dominated by Rome until around ad , including Jewish and Christian work that is similar in style to the pagan work of the same period. The Romans were always conscious of the superiority of the artistic traditions of their neighbours.
Such works of art as were made in or imported into Rome during the periods of the monarchy and the early republic were produced almost certainly by Greek and Hellenized Etruscan artists or by their imitators from the cities of central Latium; and throughout the later republican and the imperial epochs many of the leading artists, architects, and craftsmen had Greek names and were Greek, or at any rate Greek-speaking. References in ancient literature and signatures of artists preserved in inscriptions leave no doubt on this point.
According to tradition, the earliest image of a god made in Rome dated from the 6th century bc period of Etruscan domination and was the work of Vulca of Veii. A magnificent terra-cotta statue of Apollo found at Veii may give some notion of its character.

Bamburgh Castle photographed by David Simpson Photo: The Romans built roads, towns, forts and temples, bringing with them soldiers and cultures from across Europe. They conquered the native ‘Celtic’ tribes of Britain and established military control in the North with the construction of Hadrian’s Wall and the huge legionary fortress at York. In the reign of Constantine the Great, they also brought Christianity. Constantine, who was proclaimed Emperor at no less a place than York, would himself become the first Emperor to convert to Christianity.
By York was one of a number of important places in the Roman empire with a Christian bishop. Christianity was however, only one of a number of religions accepted within the Roman empire and it is not known how many Britons were actually Christians. The native people of Britain were ancient Britons, speaking a Celtic language resembling Welsh, but of course many would also learn to speak the Latin of the Romans.
Many of these people continued to practice their native Celtic ‘pagan’ religions, while others may have adopted more exotic religions introduced from other parts of the Roman empire. One thing is certain however, in years of occupation the Britons had intermixed with the multicultural Romans to form a ‘Romano-British’ society, quite different from the Celtic culture of pre-Roman times.
In the vicinity of Roman forts, native Britons intermarried with Roman soldiers enlisted from far flung corners of the Roman empire like Iraq or North Africa.

These and other aspects of this great subject will receive treatment under separate titles.
Moreover, the Christianity of which we speak is that which we find realized in the Catholic Church alone; hence, we are not concerned here with those forms which are embodied in the various non-Catholic Christian sects, whether schismatical or heretical. Kenyon “Handbook of the Textual Criticism of the N. We have this further warrant for doing so, that the most mature critical opinions amongst non-Catholics, deserting the wild theories of Baur, Strauss, and Renan, tend, in regard to dates and authorship, to coincide more closely with the Catholic position.

Share The interment of a deceased person with ecclesiastical rites in consecrated ground. The Jews and most of the nations of antiquity buried their dead. Amongst the Greeks and Romans both cremation and interment were practised indifferently. That the early Christians from the beginning used only burial seems certain.
