Feb 15, By: Emily Lindemer – Hey,Charlie How one company found the mentor they never knew the needed. Our company, Hey,Charlie , is focused on helping individuals who are in recovery for opioid use disorder. We cycled through a wide variety of mentors — lawyers, investors, engineers. We needed a visionary; someone who could connect with our mission and explore it with us. What we wanted the most out of the PULSE Mentor Matching event was to be able to connect with someone who could think big about this problem and help us go deeper. When the final gong went off to end the speed-dating rounds, I had a stack of business cards with offerings ranging from regulatory help to software design, but I was still unsure which one was the most important to pick as The One.

Experience is the best teacher of all and this particular experience was an eye-opener and game-changer for sure. So here it goes. I met up with a friend one Saturday afternoon at a bar for a football game. Soon after arriving I met J. He was cute, charming, and we seriously hit it off right away. Our afternoon of fun turned into a night out and me, my friend, J, and his friend bar-hopped, talked, laughed, danced, and played pool until the wee hours.

So You Want to Be a Leader? I have never met anyone who was successful in life who did not have at least one mentor. Having good mentors indicates that you have a great network—something every 21st century executive and leader should have. However, finding the right mentor can be a challenge. A few years ago, I worked for a company that was acquired by Sun Microsystems. I was undecided about whether to stay with Sun after the acquisition, so I consulted with one of my mentors. My mentor was very supportive of the move to Sun.
He noted correctly that, as a Silicon Valley company, Sun offered a very different organization compared to the companies I had worked for. Ultimately, I considered his input and the overall impact of taking on the role on my own personal portfolio. I accepted the job at Sun. Today, I believe that the skills and experience the job provided were instrumental in rounding out my character and helping my career growth.
My experience with Sun helped significantly in my getting my next job. Do you need a nother mentor?

Abstract Objective Speed mentoring provides brief mentoring and networking opportunities. We evaluated 1 a national speed mentoring program’s ability to encourage in-person networking and advice-sharing, and 2 2 potential outcomes: Methods An outcome approach logic model guided our program evaluation. Sixty mentees and 60 mentors participated. Each mentee met with 6 mentors for 10 minutes per pairing.
At the program, mentees created goals. At 3 months, mentors sent mentees a reminder e-mail. At 4 months, participants received a Web-based survey. Mentors as well as mentees identified shared interests, mentor—mentee chemistry, mentee initiative, and mentor approachability as key qualities contributing to ongoing relationships. Goal-setting encouraged subsequent mentor—mentee contact and motivated mentees to work toward attaining their 3-month goals.
The mentors aided mentees goal attainment by providing advice, offering support, and holding mentees accountable. Conclusions A national speed mentoring program was an effective and efficient way to establish national connections, obtain different perspectives, and receive advice.

Abby’s not just my favorite Girdler movie; it’s my all-time favorite B-movie. And Carol Speed’s performance as a devoted housewife who plunges into a seamy underworld of demons, decadence, and disco balls is what earned this film a special place in my heart. Therefore, it’s a personal honor to present the following interview. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Carol for sharing her thoughts on Abby with William Girdler.
I believe I first met William Girdler on the set of Abby.

Startups need more coaching on how to get the best from these events. Maybe the first event is where they learn, but that is not using Mentor time to best advantage. One specific thing was unclear to me at least and I think to some of the founders. Was one supposed to give feedback on quality of presentation or on substantive issues related to things like business model, competition, team and go to market strategy?
Style and substance are not opposed to each other. For people who are deep into the product, squeezing all the knowledge and passion into 5 mins can be torture and then dealing with questions from Mentors that are very ill informed makes it worse Mentors are hardly briefed after 5 mins.
